Most people don’t dream of being a used car salesman when they grow up. I am not most people. That dream, however, has been crushed by the current global crisis. Selling people their second-most expensive possession (or most expensive!) has become a health risk to both buyer and seller. So what do I usually do when my dreams are crushed? Go online car shopping to dream some more.

J.D. Power via Forbes:

Based on partial sales results in March, the report suggests retail U.S. auto sales for the month could fall by a range of roughly minus 25% to as much as 40%, vs. March 2019, said Tyson Jominy, vice president of data and analytics for J.D. Power.

That means it’s a screaming time to find a deal. I need a tow rig for the racecar and this newsletter exists to help you make bad life decisions.

Ford is offering to pay for 3 months of your payments and defer another 3 on all 2019 and 2020 models. There is one critical catch. This deal isn’t applicable to the Super Duty lineup, Raptors, or any high-performance Mustang. You’ll cap out at $2,250 worth of payments made by Ford on top of about $2,000 in incentives on an F-150.

If you’re like me, you’re probably looking towards the General for a truck. GMC is celebrating issue number 84 of carsthencoffee by offering 84 months at 0% financing on the Sierra 1500, plus payment deferrals for 4 months. This applies to most other models at the Chevy dealership as well. The Sierra and Silverado tend to have the highest amount of dealer incentives so you’ll get a deep discount and pay nothing extra to help your cash flow. For seven years.

I don’t know how anyone gets the chutzpah to name their award the North American Truck of the Year, but that’s just what the North American International Auto Show (wat?) named The Jeep Gladiator in 2020. The Gladiator seemed like it was going to be the darling of the market when it came out. A Wrangler pickup! Jeep has had trouble selling them after the initial wave and is offering deep discounts. Mopar is also matching GM’s 7 years at 0%. If you don’t need to tow anything heavy and want to build a nice overlanding rig, the Jeep Gladiator is going to be a great pick. Maybe take the savings and buy a light aluminum trailer for your racecar towing needs. KBB has more manufacturer deals on their blog.

The true impact of the COVID-19 crisis is not even close to being revealed. I don’t mean to make light of the situation but, as the saying goes, “never let a crisis go to waste”. When we have all returned to the “new normal” every industry is going to need our support. If you have the means, there may not be a better opportunity in your lifetime to buy a new car (or tow pig). Do it for yourself and do it for the economy.
